State-owned management agency Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has appointed Charles Shilowa as acting CEO, effective July 1, while the board undertakes a formal process to recruit and appoint a permanent CEO.

Outgoing CEO Mpumi Mpofu will conclude her six-year tenure at the end of her fixed-term contract on June 30, and ACSA's board and Mpofu have agreed on a carefully managed transition, with clear terms of reference and mutual cooperation.

Shilowa serves as ACSA group executive for capital infrastructure asset management, a position he has held since July 2023. Prior to this, he held several senior leadership roles at financial services firm Rand Merchant Bank, the South African Revenue Services, energy and chemicals company Sasol Technology and consumer goods multinational Unilever.

Shilowa will work closely with the board to ensure leadership continuity and the orderly management of the transition, ACSA says.

“On behalf of the board, we thank Ms Mpofu for her dedicated service to ACSA over the past six years. She has led the organisation through an unprecedented period within the global aviation sector and has overseen ACSA’s operations and financial recovery while advancing critical strategic initiatives that have strengthened the company's long-term position,” says ACSA chairperson Irvin Phenyane.
